Do you suffer pain from temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder? BOTOX® Cosmetic is an injectable solution for smoothing out signs of aging and relieving pain associated with TMJ syndrome. Discover the benefits of BOTOX Cosmetic provided by Drs. Cynthia Bailey and Tess Marie Finley in their Richmond, MI, office.

What is BOTOX Cosmetic?

BOTOX Cosmetic is one of the most popular brands of injectable botulinum toxin. By temporarily relaxing the targeted muscles, it can smooth out wrinkles and prevent new ones from forming, as well as ease TMJ pain. Your dentist will carefully determine where to inject the botulinum toxin based on your needs and expectations. You should begin to see your results within the next few days.

Type of Treatment

Cosmetic Treatment

Reducing fine lines and wrinkles is what BOTOX Cosmetic is most known for. The botulinum toxin prevents the muscles in the injected area from moving. This smooths existing wrinkles and keeps new ones from forming. BOTOX injections are mostly used to help smooth out and prevent crow's feet, horizontal forehead lines, frown lines, and small lines around the mouth. BOTOX Cosmetic is a great complement to other cosmetic dentistry treatments like Invisalign® or a complete smile makeover.

Therapeutic Treatment

For patients suffering from temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome, BOTOX injections at our Richmond, MI, practice can be an effective treatment. The pain and discomfort associated with TMJ are worsened when tensing your muscles or clenching your jaw. BOTOX Cosmetic temporarily weakens those muscles, allowing them to stay relaxed and providing relief for the patient.

Common Areas for treatment

As we age, our expressions become wrinkles: every time we smile our eyelids squeeze and the corners of our lips press against our cheeks, creating some of the most common facial lines. BOTOX Cosmetic can help prevent and eliminate these wrinkles.

Eyes

Eyes

BOTOX Cosmetic can soften or eliminate the fan-like lines near the outside corners of the eyelids. Commonly referred to as "crow's feet," these are especially visible when you laugh.

Brows

Between the Brows

Are frown lines making you look tense or angry? BOTOX Cosmetic can soften those stubborn wrinkles between your brows, also known as "11 lines".

Forehead

Forehead

We constantly move our eyebrows to show our expressions. As we age, this creates long lines across the forehead. BOTOX Cosmetic can effectively smooth out and slow the progression of these lines.

Jaw

Jaw

BOTOX Cosmetic injections in the jaw can alleviate pain associated with TMJ. They can also be used to cosmetically enhance the contours of your face, weakening and thinning the muscle for a slimmer look.

BOTOX Cosmetic as a complement to cosmetic dentistry

A confident smile doesn't just come from whiter teeth, but smooth skin around the lips and eyes. BOTOX Cosmetic is a great addition to many cosmetic dentistry enhancements such as teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, or Invisalign. Your dentist can suggest both where BOTOX Cosmetic injections would be appropriate, and the best complementary treatments to achieve the smile of your dreams.

Am I a good candidate?

Most people who are struggling with TMJ-associated pain or have unwanted wrinkles can receive botulinum toxin injections. However, you are not a good candidate for BOTOX Cosmetic if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have drooping eyelids (ptosis)
  • Have a neurological disease
  • Have weak facial muscles

Types of Botulinum Toxin injectables

There are three main brands of botulinum toxin injectables: BOTOX Cosmetic, Dysport, and Xeomin. All three are FDA-approved and are effective anti-wrinkle treatments. Since BOTOX Cosmetic, Dysport, and Xeomin all use the same toxin, the treatments are very similar, and the effects of all three last about the same amount of time. Our Richmond, MI, office carries BOTOX Cosmetic as it is considered the most trusted brand.

Can BOTOX Cosmetic treat all wrinkles?

BOTOX Cosmetic is great at getting rid of wrinkles associated with facial movements and aging. It is not, however, effective at preventing wrinkles caused by sun exposure or gravity.

What to expect

Most BOTOX Cosmetic appointments are quick enough to be completed on your lunch break.

1. Consultation

You will first meet with one of the dentists at our Richmond, MI, practice to discuss your goals and medical history.

2. Injections

Your dentist will inject the botulinum toxin directly into the area causing wrinkles or pain. No anesthesia is needed since only minor stinging or discomfort should be felt. The whole process takes less than 20 minutes.

3. After Your Injections

After your appointment, it is typically recommended you wait at least four hours before lying down, do not put any pressure on your injection sites for at least 12 hours, and do not exercise for at least 24 hours.

4. Return to Daily Routines

Apart from the recommendations above, you can go back to your normal daily activities immediately following the procedure. Minor bruising and swelling may occur but should disappear within two or three days.

Are there any side effect to Botulinum toxin injections?

The most common side effect that patients experience is mild bruising and swelling at the injection site. Always be open with your medical professional about what medications you are taking: certain medications like blood thinners can increase the likelihood of swelling and bruising at the injection site. Similarly, alcohol can also increase the risk of bruising, so you should abstain from it for at least one week before your appointment.

In addition to bruising and swelling, headaches can occasionally occur and should subside within 24-48 hours. In extremely rare cases you could experience eyelid drooping, which is caused by the botulinum toxin moving to unintended areas. This is why it is important to not touch the affected area for at least 12 hours after treatment.

When to Call Your Dentist

You should call our Richmond, MI, office immediately if you are experiencing any shortness of breath, blurred vision, slurred speech, or numbness or paralysis in an untreated area.
