Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are ceramic or metal restorations designed to resemble a tooth. In our practice, we use metal-free materials because we find that most patients prefer the aesthetic appearance of ceramic crowns. There are several situations in which a dentist may choose to place a ceramic crown, including when a tooth has been damaged, cracked, or has some structural weakness that may make it more likely to suffer decay in the future.

With our advanced digital imaging and on-site milling system, we are often able to design and place restorations in just one appointment.

For common situations such as root canal therapy or failing fillings, a crown can provide protection while saving the damaged tooth, which is better for your long-term oral health than having to replace a lost tooth down the line. Crowns are also used as caps for dental implants to replace missing teeth.

Dental crowns completely cover the visible portion of a tooth, providing enhanced aesthetics and lasting protection.

Dental Bridges

A dentist will choose to place a dental bridge to replace one or several lost teeth. If you have already lost a tooth, a bridge can provide relief from pain caused by extra pressure placed on the surrounding teeth. A bridge can also prevent the shifting and grinding that can sometimes result from tooth loss.

Traditional bridges rely on support provided by adjacent teeth which are capped with crowns, whereas implant-supported bridges are secured to posts placed in the jaw bone. If you decide a traditional dental bridge is right for you, your dentist will first prepare the teeth that will support the false tooth, or pontic, that will fill the gap left by the missing tooth. Otherwise, you will need to undergo a minor surgery to have implants embedded in the jaw. Four to six months of healing is required before your permanent bridge can be attached. Your dentist will likely place a temporary bridge to protect the prepped teeth while you wait for the lab to complete your custom bridge, which your dentist will then place in a second visit to our Richmond office.
